As soon ancestor worship kicks in, dynastic tables appear. The unenvied privilege of noble houses in Europe, detailed birth records going back many generations are a normal feature of family life in animistic cultures.

Animism in Japan

Science is not, as many believe, accumulated knowledge but, like animism, a method of analysis. It can be summed up as “Always verify your statements against reality, and pay attention to the results of your verification.

I have been in Japan 38 years. Still, people ask me where I am from because of this face, which I wouldn’t change even if I could.
