L’uomo e la donna di Victor Hugo

Man and Woman by Victor Hugo

Rocco Fontana

A beautiful poem by Victor Hugo that exalts and clarifies the relationship between man and woman. No offence to the flag bearers of the asterisk (*) but, in our humble opinion, these verses clarify why we come into this world in one form rather than another and what are the potentialities of our contribution to the World.
Happy reading!

"Man is the highest of creatures.
Woman is the most sublime of ideals.
God made a throne for man;
an altar for the woman.
The throne exalts, the altar sanctifies.

Man is the brain.
The woman is the heart.
The brain generates Light, the heart generates Love.
The fruitful Light; Love resurrects.

Man is strong by reason.
The woman is invincible for tears.
Reason convinces; tears move.

Man is capable of all heroisms.
The woman of all martyrs.
Heroism ennobles; martyrdom sublimates.

Man has supremacy.
The woman is the preference.
Supremacy means strength;
preference represents right.

The man is a genius.
The woman is an angel.
Genius is immeasurable; the angel indefinable.

Man's aspiration is supreme glory.
The aspiration of woman is the ultimate virtue.
Glory builds all that is great;
virtue builds all that is divine.

Man is a code.
Woman is a gospel.
The code corrects; the gospel perfects.

Man thinks.
The woman dreams.
Thinking is like having a larva in your skull;
to dream is to have a halo on your forehead.

Man is an ocean.
The woman is a lake.
The ocean has the pearl that adorns;
the lake the poetry that dazzles.

Man is the flying eagle.
The woman is the nightingale that sings.
To fly is to dominate space;
To sing is to conquer the soul.

Man is a Temple.
The woman is the Shrine.
In front of the temple we uncover our heads;
We kneel before the Shrine.

Finally, man is placed where the earth ends;
the woman where the sky begins".
